Johns Hopkins Medicine has a longstanding tradition of delivering on its tri-partite mission of delivering high-quality patient care, facilitating groundbreaking discoveries and training the next generation of leaders. Our foundation was built on contributions from visionary philanthropists. These contributions have advanced the science and understanding of the nervous system in particular. We are very grateful for all the generous patients who have already contributed to our research.
Contributions have been essential to our achievements ever since our inception. Before we had any federal funding, we received philanthropic contributions from generous patients that helped us get started. That seed funding helped us generate pilot data that was subsequently pivotal in obtaining larger grants. Ongoing philanthropy has helped support cutting-edge research deemed too risky by granting agencies. The next set of breakthroughs depends on funding such high-risk, high-reward research projects. We have been fortunate in receiving ongoing support but can undoubtedly benefit from more philanthropy to advance research into understanding aging and dementia.
